Fenton Robotics Team wins 2nd competition of the season! Now off to States Competition!

The Fenton High School Robotics Titanium Tigers #5114 placed first once again at a recent competition in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students.

At the Midland District Competition held March 22 -23 at H.H. Dow High School, our Titanium Tigers #5114 team won first place with our alliance.

The Tigers won the finals tiebreaker with a score of 106-68, which was a new high score for the competition. Our team also received the Excellence in Engineering award for our robot design and well-documented engineering process.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit robotics community that promotes STEM education for youth from K-12.  This year’s game theme was “Crescendo”.  To carry on this theme we named our robot "Hi-C".

To play the game, foam rings — officially called "notes" — have to be picked off the ground and scored in various ways.  Game scoring actions include: shooting notes into a target at waist level - the amplifier; shooting notes into an elevated target - the speaker; and passing notes down the field to our teammates.  The Titanium Tigers programmed the robot to use 4 cameras to locate the robot on the field.  Further programming with this data allows the robot to calculate shooting solutions for the notes from any position on the field to hit the targets.

The Titanium Tigers #5114 previously won first place with our alliance at the FIRST Robotics Competition Kettering District Event #2, held March 8-9 at Kettering University in Flint.  Our team also received the highly coveted Impact Award which is presented to the team which best promotes STEM in their community.

With this win at the Midland District Competition, our robotics team was ranked in second place in the state of Michigan out of over 500 teams.

We’re now preparing to compete at the state championships, which will take place at Saginaw Valley State University April 4-6.  We will compete at States in order to qualify for the FIRST Robotics World Championship and for the chance to present our Impact Award speech to the judges at the World Championship in Houston.

Wish us luck!
